01/11/09 - London Welsh (29) v Richmond Impalas (0)

London Welsh vs. Richmond Impalas   1st November 2009

With not a coach or a service station in sight Welsh welcomed Richmond to Old Deer Park on a rather wet and windy November day.  The sides hadn’t met since the end of the 2005/06 season where Welsh beat Richmond in a promotion decider.

Welsh got off to a good start again.  The forwards hitting the rucks hard giving the rearranged back line a chance to prove the strength in depth that the backs have this year.  A break down the right wing and a good last ditch tackle by the Richmond 15 lead to a quick pick and go at the ensuing ruck and a try for Leah.

There was no letting up.  The game was played at a good pace.  Welsh competed well at the rucks and won a lot of turnover ball.  From one in Welshs own 22 the ball was passed to B at 10 then through the hands to Catherine who sprinted the length of the pitch to score under the posts.

The forwards kept up the good work getting Welsh into great position with a scrum in Richmond’s 22.  Some sneaky stuff from the backs lead to Wolfie scoring another under the posts.

Half time came and Welsh were 19 - 0 up.

Substitutions had to be made at half time which meant Danielle came on to make her debut on the wing and Berta moved into the back row.  This didn’t seem to affect Welsh as they carried on in the same stead with strong rucking and running by the forwards and nifty hands in the backs.  Leah managed to break through some Richmond tackles and score in the corner.

Welsh kept assaulting the Richmond try line but just couldn’t seem to breach it for the bonus point try.  There were some great charge downs by Beth keeping Richmond pinned in their 22.  Finally a strong run from Leah off the back of a scrum and great supporting play by Danielle saw her into the corner, scoring her first try for London Welsh.

The match finished London Welsh 29 Richmond Impalas 0

Forward of the Match - Beth
Back of the Match - Wolfie and Bryoni
