16/03/08 - Wasps II v London Welsh (27-0)
Friday, 28 March 2008

Wasps  II   27-0 London Welsh

With a minis tournament taking place at Wasps, we played the re-arranged away fixture at home. In wet, miserable conditions Welsh faced a much stronger Wasps II than earlier in the season.

With Wolfie missing with a broken finger, Erica ably stepped up to the Captaincy and after a solid warm-up Welsh started the match with conviction and determination. Indeed, for the first 23 minutes Welsh dominated with great pressure from the scrums and in strong breaks by the back row in open play.

A breakaway try from the Wasps 12 gave the visitors a 5-0 lead, which Welsh struggled to claw back from.

In atrocious conditions, the forwards kept making good yardage and it was only from several mis-timed and ill-executed kicks that Welsh were again put under pressure in their half, resulting in another Wasps try – this time from the hooker. The attempt at conversion hitting the post and falling away left it at 10-0.

With an experimental back-line and not a lot of ball, Welsh were always under pressure and the stronger, more powerful Wasps capitalised on this with several phases of play that Welsh attempted to defend.

Particular mentions must go to Di Crowther, who played a full game at tight head and worked extremely hard and Katherine Orchard who has had only a handful of starts for Welsh and is improving in every match she plays.

Welsh dug deep and threw everything they could at Wasps but it wasn’t enough against this superior outfit. The match ended 27-0 with a bonus point try for Wasps.

Back of the match: Miriam Evans who was like a terrier on the pitch, defended well above her size/weight (although that’s not hard!) and directed the forwards well.

Forward of the match: Beth Millett who tackled like a demon and made some great yards from second row.
